I sat down with Matt Ulery a couple of months after he released In the Ivory, his latest full-length album, on Greenleaf Music. He had just played to a packed house at Constellation, and was home from a successful tour, promoting the new record. There is a certain aura surrounding him that I noticed when we sat down to talk, which I had felt when I heard him play at his record release show at Constellation. He exudes an innocence and purity that you cannot miss when you hear his compositions, mixed with an ambition with razor-sharp focus. It feels like there were these two competing forces within him; his writing remains pure and true to himself while his intellect battles to challenge notions and take things as far as they can go. This made for very engaging, honest and thought provoking conversation. This is a composer that embodies the definition of a city's secret weapon. A secret weapon with a wicked work ethic who meets challenges head on, essentially saying f-you to those challenges. He shares his thoughts on his writing process and the things he learned about himself while making this record; thoughts that have encouraged me and stuck with me, since we spoke, several months ago.
